Right to buy / home ownership
Your Right to Buy
By law you have the right to buy your council home. We cannot refuse to let you buy as long as you meet certain conditions.
How do I qualify?
To buy your council home you must meet the following conditions:
- You must be a secure tenant in a council house or flat
- If your tenancy with London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham commenced before 18 January 2005, and have been a LBHF tenant continuously since, you will still adhere to the two year right to buy qualification period. However, if your tenancy with LBHF commenced on or after 18 January 2005, you will adhere to the current five year qualification period.
You will not usually be able to buy your home if:
- You live in sheltered accommodation;
- Your home is only temporary accommodation;
- We do not own the property we have rented to you;
- Your home is provided with your job (that is you live in tied accommodation); or
- There is a court order saying you have to leave the property
